Geoffrey Scovil is an Albuquerque, New Mexico-based attorney who specializes in Habeas Corpus law. Outside of his work in Albuquerque, Geoff Scovil considers jazz his favorite musical genre, naming jazz legend John Coltrane as his favorite artist.
A recent John Coltrane documentary, Chasing Trane, found its voice for the jazz great in veteran Hollywood actor, Denzel Washington. When John Schienfield made The US Vs John Lennon, the director had no problem finding audio and video interviews of the former Beatle to help tell the story. Schienfield did not have such luck with Chasing Trane, as John Coltrane rarely ever gave audio interviews, and never did any on television, leaving the director little to work with in regard to the artist’s own words.
Despite the lack of audio and video interviews, however, Coltrane did do a number of print interviews throughout his career. To bring the musician’s words to life, Schienfield enlisted the help of Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, who takes on Coltrane’s voice in Chasing Trane, acting as a narrator for the musical great’s print interviews. According to Schienfield, Washington’s delivery is, in itself, a type of jazz.
Chasing Trane premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2016.
